Artist Turns Ordinary Stones Into Adorable Animals That Fit Inside Your Palm

Akie Nakata, a self-taught Japanese artist loved picking up stones since she was a child, and this eventually became her inspiration, as she turns pebbles into beautiful work of art.

The end results are life-like, intricate and beautifully detailed pebbles. Yet, she claims that she tries to find life in all stones she picks. Using acrylic paint, she paints various animals, from dogs and cats to birds and mice.

However, a piece of work is completed only when she sees the eyes of the animal are alive and look back at her, and not when she is done with drawing the details.

Akie believes the stones have a soul and stories to tell, and even admits talking to them at times while holding them.

The skillful artist says that when she thinks of the long time it takes for a stone to change from a huge boulder in the mountains to the size and shape it has, she thinks of the history of the earth that the stone has silently witnessed over the millennia.
