22 Practically Immortal Houseplants That Even You Can’t Kill

If you adore pops of greenery in your home, yet are plagued with a case of the dreaded black thumb, don’t despair. There are ways around this terrible condition!

Thanks to these 22 practically immortal houseplants, you too can enjoy cleaner indoor air, and the sense of relaxation and peacefulness that plants bring to the home.

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, or commonly known as “the plant of immortality” has major health benefits. You can use the gel to treat minor cuts and burns, dry skin, insect bites etc.  Place your Aloe vera plant on a window that gets a lot of sun. It doesn’t require much watering as it is a semi-tropical succulent.

2. Areca Palm

The Areca Palm is a popular plant among indoor planters and it can reach up to eight feet tall. It needs bright indirect light, warm temperatures and frequent watering

3. Arrowhead Vine

You can prune your Arrowhead to make it retain a bush-shape, or allow it to grow wild and free, when it will form a trailing vine. The Arrowhead Vine is needs indirect light, although it won’t tolerate temperatures below 60 degrees.

4. Boston Fern

The Boston Fern is native to sub-tropical and tropical rain forests. You can create these growing conditions by placing your fern on a windowsill which receives lots of indirect light, and in temperatures of between 55 and 75 degrees. In warmer months, and when new fronds appear, keep the soil evenly moist, but not saturated. In the winter, let the soil’s surface dry slightly before watering.

5. Bromeliad

Bromeliads make great indoor plants for those who don’t own a garden. These don’t have much needs and aren’t susceptible to many pests. They thrive in bright, sunny spaces with indirect sunlight, and should be fertilized quite sparingly.

6. Cacti and Succulents

Growing Cacti and Succulents is a hobby to many gardeners – mainly because these tough, juicy plants are next to impossible to kill. They live in the desert, so this is really fantastic! Place your cactus or succulent on the windowsill or in the sunniest spot in your home, and neglect them when it comes to watering.

7. Cast Iron Plant

The Cast Iron Plant can survive low light, infrequent watering and extreme heat. It is important to place your potted plant in low to moderate light and remember to keep it out of direct sunlight; and water it frequently, (but allow it to dry in between).  This plant needs average humidity and in temperatures from 50 to 85 degrees.

8. Chinese Evergreen

For many gardeners, the Chinese Evergreen have been the first choice, since it’s great for beginners. It grows an average to 2 feet long. Find a window facing north and place it there, even though it can manage in other locations as long as they are kept out of direct sunlight.

9. Crown of Thorns

The Crown Of Thorns plant should be placed in a very sunny window and it should receive 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. Once the soil is dry, make sure to water it. Note that, although cute and hardy, this plant is poisonous if eaten and the sap causes skin irritations so gloves are essential.

10. Diffenbachia

This plant’s leaves can grow to 1 foot long, and the whole Diffenbachia plant can grow to 6 feet high. It needs basic care as it is grown indoors, and thrives year round in average room temperatures, even though it prefers they stay above 60 degrees. It needs moist soil and it can tolerate low humidity. Reduce the watering during the winter.

11. Dracaena

People plant dracaena for small offices or apartments because it gives a pleasant look and appearance. There are over 40 species of dracaena. Amazing, right? It can tolerate low light, low humidity and even the occasional missed watering. Place it in indirect sunlight (and keep the soil moist.

12. English Ivy

We have been talking about English Ivy in some of our previous articles, about how this plant can really purify the air, and it has also been shown that English Ivy can improve symptoms of allergies and asthma. This evergreen vine only needs moderate exposure to sunlight, although it does have a preference for moist soil and cooler room temperatures. Don’t let English Ivy around your pets since it is toxic for them.

13. Fiddle Leaf Fig

The Fiddle Leaf Fig likes bright, indirect light, and temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees. Water only when the top inch of soil is dry.

14. Golden Pothos

Golden Pothos leaves are one of my favorite leaves ever. So beautiful and stunning! This plant needs little nurturing – a couple of hours of morning sun and a little water once a week will see it thrive. Keep it in a hanging basket to stop it from getting out of control.

15. Grape Ivy

You should place Grape Ivy in a hanging basket. It likes moderate to bright light, although not direct sun. Water the Grape Ivy generously throughout the growing season, and keep the soil moist. If the leaves turn brown, check that the plant is out of direct sunlight and the humidity isn’t too low.

16. Jade Plant

Jade Plant is easy to be taken care of. In order to keep its thick leaves hydrated and lush, you’ll need to water regularly. Aside from that, all  Jade Plant requires is full sun and fertilizer twice a year.

17. Peperomia

Peperomia are one of the most decorative and colorful plants you will ever see. They can tolerate poor light and also, they thrive in brightness, but not direct summer sunlight. Water your Peperomia only when the soil is quite dry.

18. Philodendron

There are many different tyoes of this tropical-looking indoor plant, even though the split-leaf is the most popular. These plants won’t require much time, since they are easy to grow. And, if you keep an eye on them, the Philodendron will let you know what it needs. Place the plant in bright, indirect sunlight. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Drooping leaves indicate its watering schedule needs to be adjusted.

19. Rubber Tree

Rubber Tree is another impressive greenery that will beautify your space. It thrives in household temperatures and needs humidity. Place it on a spot that receives light, but not direct sunshine, and make sure the soil is evenly moist.

20. Snake Plant

The Snake Plant usually has yellow or white leaves and it often grows upright. Its flowers are white and they rarely bloom. It emits oxygen at night and this makes the air better by creating healthy sleeping patterns. It can survive low light levels and drought and it isn’t prone to infestations from insects. Just place it in a spot that receives indirect sunlight and allow it to dry between watering.

21. Spider Plant

You can find this interesting plant in almost all public spaces or waiting rooms. The reason for this is because it removes odors, fumes and about 90% of formaldehyde from the air. However, it needs low maintenance. It needs evenly moist soil and medium lighting in temperatures (40 to 85 degrees)

22. Zeezee Plant

The ZZ can handle a fair amount of neglect and isn’t susceptible to any pests. As it grows in a broad spectrum of light conditions, a North, East or West facing window will all work for the ZZ, whereas deep shade or direct sunlight will not.
